New Library of the Constitutional Court in the Palazzo della Consulta

Rome, 2000 - 2001

New library of the Constitutional Court at the Palazzo della Consulta in Rome. The new library, while ensuring maximum numerical use for volumes and maximum functional rationality for reading and offices, takes on those characteristics of environmental dignity that are consonant with the prestige of the Constitutional Court within the framework of the rest of the Constitutional Organs.

The best use of the space of the Consultation Rooms, necessary to contain about 40,000 volumes, was made with the adoption of balconies and upper shelves; This also allows direct accessibility of the volumes to a maximum height not exceeding 2 m with rational distribution of access, service stairs and the continuity of the balconies themselves.

Fundamental element of the furniture is constituted by the structural autonomy of the shelves and balconies in a way completely independent of the masonry, as well as the upper frames with the distribution of air conditioning and the lower plinths useful for the arrangement of the recovery channels and electrical and special systems. For the realization we chose the wood finish (with fire-retardant materials for the structures) as already allowed in similar libraries, using for finishing the national walnut, cherry, maple or cedar to maintain the traditional character.
